Sway bar is handy item to save body roll on cornering or other case. Now this part is common to fit as standard, however it will be recommended to use “reinforced Sway bar” if you want to improve your driving feel more.
This part is ideal for the people who is annoying with body roll, who want to get feeling safety or sporty, whose family member are easy to get car sick. It’s suitable for standard vehicle, and also the car which makes inch up on tyre&wheel, which is using low-down spring or ride-height adjustable coil over will get effect from this item. What’s “Sway bar” anyway?

The Sway bar is stick form part which is installing with connect both side of suspension. Normally the device is long U-shaped or transformation of U-shape. Middle of the device is fixed on centre of car body, and both ends connected to the suspension on each side. When the car is cornering and leaning to side, one side of suspension is pressed and another one is stretched which makes Sway bar twisting.
However Sway bar itself has ability of spring, so Sway bar try to back from twisting. Sway bar uses its resistance to save the body roll. ”Reinforced Sway bar is intensified the power of resistance which save body roll better than standard device and making stabilize movement of car when cornering or lane change on motorway, driving winding road.

Now almost vehicle is released with fitting Sway bar as standard. The device is fitting one each of under floor of front and rear. When you install reinforced Sway bar, you need to take standard device off and swap to reinforced one. The work will be needed to car up with jack or lift, so you may need to ask workshop for the work normally. It’s depended on car model, but in case of Toyota Previa / Tarago(on images) which is easy to take Sway bar off, normally the swapping work will take about an hour. However if the standard Sway bar through engine room and frame, it could take 5 hours.
F.Y.I., On the images of Previa/Tarago is installing “Rear Stabi-bar” on rear which has different structure. It’s still connected each side of suspension but not fixed on car body. However the effect is same as Sway bar.

Saving body roll and roll speed on cornering

The main purpose to use reinforced Sway bar is saving body roll on cornering. Like Mini-van which has tall body tend to leaning much naturally. The character will make instability form which give driver worry or uncomfortable feeling.
With fitting reinforced Sway bar, amount of leaning is decreasing and save sudden body roll or faltering, so driving form will be stable which give driver safety feeling. When swerve steering, the car makes turn smoothly without faltering, so driving feel is close to sporty and nicely which will makes fun driving. You can drive safely when make lane change on motorway without faltering or even driving on straight. Also driving on rutted road, Sway bar pushes tyres on surface stably.

Is riding feel still good?

There is another way to saving body leaning which is use harder spring on suspension. But in this case, body leaning can be saved but also riding feeling can be changed. However “reinforced Sway bar” can save leaning while the riding would not become worse. The reason why is because Sway bar will work only when suspension makes unequal movement. In that time, the built in resistance to twisting helps to combat the rolling action. If both side of suspension move same way together, Sway bar will not twist which meant both side of connection just swing same time & same direction so Sway bar has no effect. It says that if both side of tyre over step in same time, riding feeling will not be worse. Also when driving winding road, Sway bar save extra faltering or sudden leaning which treat less chance of getting car sick which is one of big merit of using reinforced Sway bar.

Comparing to spring rate of Sway bar

Sway bar has ability of spring with the device itself. It’s made by tempered steel material called “Spring steel”. Because having spring ability, it can be measured the ability as spring rate which is regarded by how much force it will be needed to bend 1mm. Having higher spring rate means having more force to save car leaning. Cusco’s reinforced Sway bar is set the spring rate 1.2-1.5 times than standard in case of mini van because completely no leaning could be cause other trouble still saving some of leaning. Cusco specifically developed measuring system for spring rate of Sway bar. In case of Previa/Tarago(in image), the reinforced Sway bar has about 5.4kg/mm spring rate compare to about 4.0kg/mm of standard which means 1.35 times harder than standard.

Reinforced Sway bar is effective for not only standard car but also for the car which make inch tyre&wheel up or installs low down spring. Making car inch up could cause unstable movement. But with using reinforced Sway bar, you can save those unappreciated movement. While car with low down spring, even height is downed, the car can not save leaning well sometime when balance of shock absorber is appropriate. In case of this, reinforced Sway bar saves car leaning which improve overall balance. Fully ride-height adjustable coil over kit also have effect to save car leaning or making response from steering sharper.
